The Trails Invite You Still

(A call for help)

As it is related in Sam Bogan’s "No Larger Fields" the terrain making up Camp Sequassen was formed over a period of one half billion years. Through slow changes the rugged landscape became varied and beautiful. Early pioneers tried to farm the land, as told by the remnants of many rock walls. But the soil while rich was found to be shallow.

For its natural beauty alone we are fortunate that our predecessors chose this area for our camp. Possessing a natural beauty that is not only in the developed areas or in ones aspect of the lake, but is also locked in the hundreds of outlying acres - and trails are the key. The trails that bring the wonder of these areas to the boys. Trails which unfortunatly are constantly affected by the changes of time.

You see the trouble is Mother Nature (as always) has not stopped making changes. Add to this our influence, including the clearing of camp sites and cutting of trails across the land, which have welcomed many footfalls - including those tired and dragging ones. And you get a condition of accelerated erosion, of loss to the already shallow soil especially in the developed areas.

For to long now, Sequassen has been in need of individuals interested in preserving and bringing the natural beauty of our camp to the boys. There has not been an organized effort for decades. So the slate is clean, you can get involved and develop a committee; the “Sequassen Trails & Conservation Committee”. Whose efforts would be coordinated with the Camp Rangers and those of the Sequassen Maintenance Committee.

Actually, you don’t need to get caught up in organization, it’s the result, the camp and the boys that matter so don’t let the details throw you. Get involved and do your part in an area which holds interest to you. Just e-mail us to get  things started.
