Building Trades MB Workshop
Saturday, June 24, 2017
Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 777 Meriden Training Facility
Scouts age 13 and over are invited to come to the fourth annual Connecticut Building Trades Merit Badge Workshop and earn two of ten trade-oriented badges: American Labor, Architecture, Electricity, Engineering, Metalwork, Painting, Plumbing, Surveying, Welding and Woodwork. All badges are taught by Master Tradesmen and give the Scouts a hands-on opportunity to earn badges that are often hard to earn in your home troop.
Due to capacity and safety rules at the training center, this event is limited to the first 120 Scouts who register online. Some badges have class size limitations due to equipment or safety rules. Every badge has multiple prerequisites which must be completed prior to attending the Workshop. NEW Merit Badge pamphlets must be purchased and opened/read by the Scout ahead of time. At least one adult must register and attend from each participating troop.
- Download the Merit Badge requirements. Items highlighted must be completed in advance, and appropriate documentation (for example if it says "write about ...") must be brought to the Workshop for review by the counselor.
The Saturday program begins with an 8 a.m. opening ceremony followed by two 3-hour merit badge sessions with a break for lunch. The registration fee of $35 per Scout includes patch, Saturday breakfast and lunch, and associated program materials. The adult registration fee of $10 covers patch and meals. Additional patches are available for $3 each.
Registration opens for Connecticut Yankee Council Scouts on April 3, and for all Scouts on April 17.
Online registration closes on June 16. A waiting list will be set up when the event reaches capacity.
Given the unique nature of this event, each registration is by the individual Scout or adult. It is recommended that if one individual from the unit is registering the Scouts that they be prepared with second and potentially third choices for the boys as the badges (like Plumbing, Surveying and Welding) are expected to fill quickly.
