Scouts CAN

Scouts CAN’s primary goals are to finance simple, decent housing for under-privileged families in the region through Habitat for Humanity & to prevent bottles & cans from entering landfills.  We are striving to finance 1 home in each of the Habitat affiliates covered by our council – New Haven, Bridgeport and Danbury by 2010.

Our secondary goals are to raise awareness of Scouting in the community, demonstrate the benefits of volunteering to our youth, and reinforce the concept that many hands working together CAN accomplish great things.

Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller and his wife Linda.  Since then >300K homes have been built by Habitat International and >1.5MM people have been housed.

Habitat homes are built on donations of time, materials and money, then sold to “Partner Families” at cost.  The Partner Families are chosen based on their level of need, willingness to become partners in the program, & ability to repay the loan.  Partner Families must make a down payment, pay off the low-interest mortgage, & invest 100s of hours of “sweat equity” on their home and others.

Scouts CAN Unit Goal for 2009 - Raise the equivalent of 1 can/day/Scout (365*$0.05 or $18.25 per scout).  Goal is based on the number of active Scouts in the unit as of June 2009.

Scouts CAN Events Open to the Whole Council

Scouts CAN @ ConnJam

-- Units should bring their bottles and cans (in bags) on Friday night / Saturday morning at check in.  Units will be given credit for their cans toward their unit recognition goals.  Please count your cans in advance for us and we’ll take you at your word, after all “A Scout is Trustworthy” (we will not have the time to count them on site so they’ll just go into the overall CYC Scouts CAN total)

-- There will be a Scouts CAN / Habitat for Humanity booth in the troop midway from 9am to 6pm on Saturday
