Basic Leader Training

Following the completion of Fast Start Training, volunteers are asked to complete the courses in the basic leader training series specific to the position for they are registered.  Basic Leader Training is available for Cub Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders and Venturing Leaders. All volunteers should complete "This Is Scouting" (replaces New Leader Essentials) and then the specific training appropriate to their registered position in Scouting. The Basic Leader Training program is seamless training program that helps leaders easily graduate through the courses quickly and with little duplication.

This Is Scouting

"This Is Scouting" is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting.  It replaces New Leader Essentials (effective March 15, 2009), and addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Available through My Scouting, the material is presented during a 45-minute training session.

The benefits of "This Is Scouting" include:

  1. Assistance in implementing the full Scouting program with chartered organizations
  2. A better understanding of the advantages of encouraging youth and adult volunteers to move through the traditional program as their youth mature
  3. An awareness of the different aspects of the Scouting program, which may result in leaders taking advantage of those programs for a child in a different age group

Leader Specific Training

Cub Scout Specific Leader Training programs are now available on-line, while other programs are not available on-line or over the internet. These training programs are offered within each District at convenient locations hosted by dedicated volunteers who want to help make your Scouting experience enjoyable. To find what specific leader training programs are available in your District, please consult the Council Training Calendar and your District website.

Cub Scout Leader Specific Training - Tiger Cub den leaders, Wolf Cub den leaders, Bear Cub den leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters, Pack Trainers, and Pack Committee Members can complete this training on-line at My Scouting. This training can also be completed in one day or two or three evenings. These trainings will cover in detail your role in the Pack and what you will be working on with the Scouts in your den. Additionally, the following brochures are designed to provide an at-a-glance orientation for new Cub Scout leaders. All files are in PDF:

Boy Scout Leader Specific Training - Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, this training is divided into four parts. The first three parts concentrate on troop operation and can be completed in one full day or three evenings. The fourth part is Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. The leader is considered trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. Click here more more information about this training program.

Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills - Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Scout Coaches. The course is based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook for the ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences. The course is typically a day and a half long, but a leader can move at an accelerated pace by demonstrating mastery of one or more specific skills. Click here more more information about this training program.

Troop Committee Challenge - For troop committee members, Leader Specific training includes the Troop Committee Challenge. By following the Troop Committee Training Syllabus, participants can complete the challenge in three hours, after which they are considered trained. This course is also available through the BSA On-Line Learning Center.

Venturing Leader Specific Training - Developed for Venturing Advisors, Assistant Advisors, and Crew Committee Members, this training incorporates Venturing's current adult leader training. New Leader Essentials and Venturing Leader Specific Training can be completed in one day, after which the leader is considered trained. This training will detail such things as advancement, youth leadership, and how to run an effective Crew.

Sea Scout Officer Training - Developed for Skippers and other Sea Scouters, but Council and District volunteers who support the Sea Scouting program will find this information useful as well. This training helps the Sea Scouter run an effective program. For a Sea Scouter to be considered fully trained in his or her position, this program must be completed in addition to Venturing Leader Specific Training.
