Why Require Training?

Our Council adopted a program of Required Training at the end of 2006. The National Council is presently adopting a similar program for all Councils. The National initiative is being piloted in 20 Councils this year and will be rolled out across the US starting in January 2011. So the question is: why do this?

First, trained leaders provide a better, higher quality, program than untrained leaders. Trained leaders understand the need to present solid program to their Scouts. They have been trained the in resources available for programs and they know what types are programs are appropriate (and not appropriate) for their youth members. Trained leaders are better able to teach their youth members and help their youth members advance.

Second, trained leaders provide a safer program than untrained leaders. Trained leaders understand safe scouting practices. Trained leaders know the rules, regulations, and safe practices of Scouting and are better equipped to keep their Scouts and fellow Scouters healthy and safe.

Third, trained leaders are better leaders. They are better at applying sound leadership skills to their units. They are better at recruiting and training youth and adult leaders. They are better at managing change and conflict. They are better at receiving and using feedback to improve themselves and their unit.

Can untrained leaders run a good program, run a safe program, recruit and train youth leaders? Probably. Do trained leaders always run a good program, a safe program, and successfully recruit and train youth leaders? No. But wouldn’t we always prefer to have a trained leader over an untrained one? Absolutely. We expect the volunteer fire firefighter to be completely trained just in case they have to come to our house at 3 AM to douse a fire. Why wouldn’t we have the same expectation for the Scout Leader, who is responsible for our children, to be fully trained in their position?

Thank you for all you do in Scouting. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our youth members.
