What is University of Scouting? UoS is an all-day event focused on providing additional training opportunities  for Adult Leaders. Over 60 class offerings are included in our catalog, focusing on Scouts BSA, Cub Scouts, or General Scouting. Learn how to tie unique knots, successfully recruit more youth, plan an amazing outing, run an awesome unit meeting, fix unit problems, and create a better overall program for our youth.

This is chance to interact face to face with other leaders across the ENTIRE council; you can ask questions, present problems and seek solutions.  You can also share your experiences with others to cooperatively help each other, one idea at a time.

The learning will be in the classrooms, but also in the hallways.

The registration fee is $15.00 per participant (including faculty and staff) which includes a patch. Upon registration, participants will be asked to make course selections so that we can staff accordingly.  If a course does not meet a minimum number of participants, it may be cancelled.  Schedule changes can be made up until the day of the event

THERE IS NO PLANNED LUNCH SERVICE – Please bring your own food and snacks.

We WILL have coffee, tea, juice as well as hot and cold water with appropriate cups.

We will NOT have access to microwaves, refrigeration or food warming at the school.

It is vital that you include a valid email address when registering for UoS. We will use your email address to communicate any schedule changes (or weather delays).

COMM1 Basic Unit Commissioner Develop an understanding of the concept of Unit Service, recognize the role of the Unit Commissioner, and identify the interrelationships and functions of the District.
COMM3 Commissioner Roundtable Basic Learn the foundations of commissioner service and contextualize where unit service fits within the functioning of the district. We will pay particular attention to the role of the Roundtable Commissioner and emphasize how Roundtables strengthen units
COMM5 Advance commissioner’s forum and discussion. Discussion on Commissioner goals and methods, new topics on commissioning, new National roles, and District and Council support.
CUB11 Campfire planning Do you need to start or rebuild a strong campfire program in your pack? Join this session for all the tools to accomplish that goal! Campfires are SO much fun for Cub Scouts.
CUB12 Ways to utelize Den Chiefs; A Leader's view of the Den Chief course and oath, as well as ideas for immediate application and troubleshooting.
CUB21 The New Cub Scout Program Cheryl Izyk, the Program Lead for Council Service Territory 11, will share an overview of the changes coming to the Cub Scout Program in June 2024. Come learn breaking details and get answers to your questions.
CUB31 Great skits and Wacky Run ons Are you tired of seeing the Invisible Bench skit at your campfire program? Join this session to learn about great skits, wacky run ons, and how to teach your scouts to participate in them to have fun!
CUB32 Neurodivergent learners in Cub Scouts A collection of research and resources to help support your neurodivergent Scouts with immediate application to Den Meetings.
CUB33 Leave No Trace & Outdoor Code for Cub Scouts An overview of how Leave No Trace and the Outdoor Code are used in the Cub Scout program, including fun activities that help Cubs understand these concepts and how they are applied during camping trips and to earn electives.

CUB52 Edible crafts Learn about fun crafts for your next Den or Pack meeting that are also edible. Yes, sampling is included in this class.
CUB61 Cub Scout Hike Planning Covers the six essentials of hiking with cub scouts, plus local trails appropriate for cub scouts.
CUB62 Cubs with special needs Strategies to engage the youth and allow them to do their best!
GEN11 What makes up a Council and how does it operate Mark Kraus, CYC Scout Executive, will share how a BSA council works to support the Program for our Youth
GEN12 Committee Chairs: How to organize your committee This class will cover how to split up all the responsibilities of the unit committee into small, understandable pieces so that many adult volunteers can split up the workload and make it more manageable.
GEN13 Unit Fundraisers Teach your Scouts to interact effectively with the public and provide funding to fulfill the needs of the unit and/or the Scout.
GEN14 Stop the Bleed Part 1 Two Period Class. Stop the Bleed continues to empower the general public to make a difference in a life-threatening emergency by teaching the basic techniques of bleeding control.
GEN21 Women on the Trail Recommended for women only. What women want to know about how to manage on the trail in Scouting. Equipment, personal care, preparation… A frank discussion of issues specific to women and examples of equipment that works for female trekkers.
GEN22 Unit Fundraisers Teach your Scouts to interact effectively with the public and provide funding to fulfill the needs of the unit and/or the Scout.
GEN23 Adult Leader Recruitment Adult leaders are the lifeblood of the unit.  We will cover the most effective strategies, approaches, and techniques to recruiting adult leaders.
GEN24 Stop the Bleed Part 2 Two Period Class. Stop the Bleed continues to empower the general public to make a difference in a life-threatening emergency by teaching the basic techniques of bleeding control.
GEN25 Basic Dutch Oven cooking Learn the many uses of Cast Iron:  This course will include the basics of cleaning and caring for your cast iron and Dutch Ovens as well as how to cook in your Dutch Oven
GEN31 Telling your Scouting Story Every Scout, Scouter and family has a story— from memorable activities to why they’re in Scouting to long legacies in the program and more. Learn how you can leverage YOUR story to grow your unit, engage alumni, promote your activities and activate families with this interactive training sessions.
GEN32 Religious emblems Come learn how to encourage our youth members to grow stronger in their faith.
GEN33 Advanced Dutch Oven cooking This course could truly lead you to an addiction with Dutch Oven Cooking.  Learn additional cooking methods using this very versatile piece of equipment,
GEN41 Adaptive Scouting: Finding a different way to be involved in
Scouting and BSA inclusion topics.
This class is intended to help you understand the BSA guidelines for serving those with disabilities as well as discussing the instructor's personal experience with this topic.
GEN42 Basic Dutch Oven cooking Learn the many uses of Cast Iron:  This course will include the basics of cleaning and caring for your cast iron and Dutch Ovens as well as how to cook in your Dutch Oven
GEN44 Sea Scouts and The Sailing School CYC offers a variety of exciting programs that enable youth to experience and explore the Long Island Sound. Sailing is so much more than just learning to operate a boat. Come to this session to learn more about Sea Scouts, Maritime Explorers, The Sailaway Sailing School and how you and your scouts can get involved.

GEN63 Communication Skills; Public Speaking Made Easy (or at least not frightening) Communication Skills: In this session we'll talk about the little things you can do to take your comfort (or lack thereof) of public speaking to the next level.
GEN64 Introduction to First Aid for Leaders Part 2 Two period class.
GEN65 Communications Did you know there are tools, resources and support available to you from the Connecticut Yankee Council and the Boy Scouts of America? Be prepared for recruiting, engagement and more with good communication tools.
GEN66 BSA Fishing Basics A one hour course that will teach any adult or youth all that they need to know to start fishing successfully.
SCO11 Beyond "ramen noodles" - Creative Backpacking Meals Backpacking meals sourced off the shelves of your local market. Simple, easy and delicious meals.
SCO12 Axe Throwing Covers how scouts can safely and inexpensively incorporate axe throwing into their outdoor activities. This includes the axe throwing merit badge that I proposed to National back in 2009.
SCO13 Counseling the Citizenship In Society Merit Badge Learn all you need to know about being a Merit Badge Counselor for this latest addition to the Citizenship Badges needed for Eagle

SCO23 Scouts BSA Special Circumstance Strategies for the lack of engagement and cooperation in the troop after Covid.
SCO24 Intro to Youth Leadership (ILST) ILST (Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops) is a foundational course designed to equip scouts with essential leadership skills within the Boy Scouts of America framework. Participants will learn and share best practices on how to use this course to prepare youth for leadership success.
SCO25 Leave No Trace & Outdoor Ethics for ScoutsBSA A discussion of how the Leave No Trace principles, the Outdoor Code, and Tread Lightly! fit into the ScoutsBSA program. The role of the Outdoor Ethics Guide in the troop will be discussed, along with opportunities for more advanced training.

SCO41 Sequassen Summer Camp Preparation for Unit Leaders This course is designed for unit leaders, new unit leaders, and summer camp coordinators to get familiar with the procedures and best practices of bringing your unit to summer camp. Topics of discussion will include the registration process, merit badge selection, medical form processes, swim checks, and other items to help you and your Scouts have a smooth start to your week at camp.
